On most small Quads/buggies etc, there is a wire from the CDI that kills the spark, either it sparks when this wire is not earthed or when it is earthed. If you disconnect it and the machine sparks, you've cracked it. If that doesn't work, disconnect, run it to earth, if it sparks, you've cracked it. Be sure to get the right wire, and you then have to work out how to put a kill switch in the circuit to stop it.

The hand brakes just light the tail light and, on some, put a lock out on the starter, nothing to do with the spark. The kill switch is on the handlebars and on some, another at the back of the bike.
