Default Starter smoking

I have a 300 ex Honda , the original starter didn’t work anymore and the atv was fine before i took it out , I put a new starter in it didn’t have any # on the starter like the original and it didn’t fit so we hit it And it don’t go in as much as the old one and the screws didn’t fit so we made bigger holes on the starter where the screws go i pressed the start button and it started smoking but where I ordered it it said it fits 93 to 09 Honda 300ex and it a 04 , could it be it’s the wrong starter ??

Looks like it was the wrong starter. You shouldn't have to alter things to make them fit. Too late now, but you should have sent it back. Get another from a different supplier, though 90% of the time all your original starter would have needed is a new set of brushes. Never hit a starter by the way, the magnets are quite capable of dropping off without help from a hammer.
