AC to DC motor swap HELP Please
#1
Hi all,
So we picked up a Baja 250 really cheap that supposedly had never really been ran. Got it all cleaned out fired up and rode it once or twice only to find a Knox / tick in the motor. We did adjust valves and everything else that we could do to make sure it wasn't that. Well, rather than diagnosing it a whole brand new motor was $350 on sale which sounded fantastic. Even better yet I found one on OfferUp locally that I had for a hundred bucks. I verified both of them were 167fmm motors and everything looks good. Getting home and on closer inspection I discovered that the motor I bought is a 250cc not a 230cc and even worse I found out it has a 12 Pole statter, 5 wires coming out and the plug is different. Now I've watched a bunch of videos about how it all works in a couple on converting it for the headlights but my question is can I either take the AC statter out of the old motor along with the spinning magnet and mount that all up in this motor to run or order a DC CDI box and wiring harness to get this bike up and run with this 250?
Any help would be really great as I talked a friend into getting this and I'm taking responsibility for it till it's up and running for her.
Thanks mucho

"I believe China has started making the instructions on everything they're sending over here smaller and smaller so we have to keep squinting more and more to read them. That way when they take over we all looked assimilated and they don't have to feel self-conscious. Dang those smart Chinese!"

It may be worth trying the stator from the old engine. Googled it, and the mounting holes are listed as 40mm apart for one and 41mm apart for the other, this could be whoever measured it getting it wrong or it could be trouble. You don't mention what colours and jobs the existing wires do. The 5 wire stator looks simple, three yellow to regulator and the other two will be pulse and earth from pulse coil. You could just get a DC CDI and use a live from ignition switch to power it, instead of the AC feed wire from the alternator which the old engine used. However, if you have a two wire from stator regulator, this would also need altering. There are, I have recently learnt, two types of DC CDI. the simple one which uses a positive from ignition switch for power, and forget the kill wire as you don't need it, and the Kawasaki 300 type which used the old car system, this had a 12v coil with a pos wire to it, and pulsed negative from CDI (ignitor) to coil.

Thanks MerryMan. Yes, the DC motor has 3 yellow, 1 blue/white and 1 green. I'm going to see if I can swap the stator, magnet and all that from the old motor to new here today, just have to check the clearances and if it mounts right. I'm thinking that or a DC CDI box are my choices right now, but you know how it goes, one wrong guess here has me deeper in the rabbit hole lol. I'll keep updating on how it goes.
