Hey guys! New to the site and somewhat new to quads. I've ridden them as a child on the farm but never owned until now. I inherited a neglected Baja Wilderness Trail 400 that needs some TLC. It does start and carry me around but needs some work in other areas. The one I'm dealing with now is the push button 4wd. It won't disengage. The light is lit on the display and I have lifted it to confirm that whether the button is in or out, it's driving all four wheels.
Now, working on quads is new to me, but I do all my own work on my vehicles and have a shop loaded with tools so I'm looking to dive in and get this quad back into shape for running around. Where should I be looking to remedy this problem? I also would like to know what the large button with the grip bumps is beside the 2wd switch. I have included a picture for reference. I have looked through the online manual and the switch there is different from what I have on my handle bar.
Thanks!
The lever with the bumps is front diff lock, switch is made that way so you have to stick it in 4WD before the lever can be slid sideways to engage diff lock. Don't know the Baja at all, but most 4WD problems are the servo motor in the diff burnt out. It is usually a door lock motor from a car, but finding a new one strong enough to turn the 4WD/diff lock mechanism, is difficult.
Thanks for the info! On further investigation, the switch is getting power down to what Baja calls the "divided move assembly", as I checked with a multimeter and get close to 12 volts on all 3 connections (3 wires plus ground) with 4wd switched on and lose power to one connection when it is switched to 2wd. Thus, I think my next option is to replace this divided move assembly as I hear no noise from it when toggling the switch. Not an easy find though. Seems discontinued on a couple sites that supply Baja parts.
