Got it. Thanks.

Last question (for now). Do I use grease under those sleeves for rust protection? Or will that just make a mess when dirt gets in there?

I almost always use a little grease..If you want to be really cool.. get some orings ( 4...2 for each side) that fit over the axle... put 1 on each side of the sleeve and they will keep the grease in and the dust out..

Thanks again for the guidance.

Neither the local auto parts store nor hardware store had washers with an I.D. big enough for the axle. Ended up using rubber gasketing sheet from the plumbing department. Cut some washers out of the rubber. It's working nicely. I've got the axle back in place, along with the chain, and the quad is back on all fours. I've got a used header from a Honda 200 coming, hoping it will mate up properly to the motor's head. If it fires up, I'll buy a muffler for this thing.

Still to do:

Wire in the regulator
Wire the start/kill switch back in.
Install a battery
Install new rear disc brake pads
Fill/bleed the brake hydraulics
Put in a fuel cutoff valve
Fix the choke cable assembly
Deal with whatever carb issues come up

It's gonna be a bit of a stripper with minimal circuitry just for starting, stopping, and charging the battery, but I figure that's one way to help keep this thing running, by doing away with the potential for electrical faults.
