Default dumb question about manual chokes

on my atv carb, it has a manual choke...to start it when cold, should the lever be turn the way that closes or opens the choke plate ?? when the bike is warmed up and ready to go, is the plate supposed to be opened or closed?

A cold engine needs a higher fuel/air ratio (more fuel). The way a standard choke works is to block the air intake when cold (choke plate closed) with raises the fuel/air ratio since there is less air.

So closed when cold, open when warm.

thats what i thought..think i just figured out my issue...been turning the choke lever the wrong way closing the plate and thereby cutting off all the air making it stall....just put the carb back in and tried the other direction leaving the plate wide open and now it idles lower...just have to get it tuned...with the idle screw back out alot and the fuel screw on 2 it seems high and as i screw the fuel screw in it lowers....seems like backing the idle screw out more doesnt lower it anymore....any idea where the idle screw should be set to start with

Welcome to the forum rdhj!

The idle screw should allow the engine to die if turned out far enough.. check to make sure the throttle cable is adjusted so there is some free play in the cable..most have a adjustment in the middle of the cable and on at least 1 end... if the cable is to tight it wont let the carb lower the idle..

Ok, thats what I thought...maybe i'm just thinking the idle should be lower then it was designed to be set....good idea about checking the cable...did notice the way its routed, it has a bend in the calbe before it goes into the carb since the cable goes into the top ofthe carb and the gas tank is right there...i will check the cable, set the mixure screw at 2 turns, and then back the idle out until it trys to stall and then attempt the tuning procedure i saw on here
