Sportsman 500 wont idle or reverse
#1
Hey all I'm new to this forum but I have been riding since a little kid. I have a problem with my newly bought (but older model) Sportsman 500. When you start the machine it runs for about 5 seconds sputters and dies. If you give it a little bit of gas however it will idle just fine. I have no idea what the problem is with that. Another thing wrong with it is Reverse doesn’t seem to work. When I test rode it, it worked about 3 of the 5 times I tried to back it up. The more I seemed to put it in reverse the faster it died. I was thinking an injection problem but as I am not a mechanic I have no clue as to what the problem is. If anyone could help me out that would be cool. I am good at following directions so if you tell me something I can do it. I just don’t know where to start. Thanks again.

there is a safety built into the throtle. If it sense that maybe the throtle is stuck open and it will quit. simple fix.
your thumb throtle has a cable coming out of it and there is an adjustment in the cable near the thumb. just try to take out the slack thats in the cable by adjusting it there and all should be good
let us all know. ok

Do what Rickster suggests. The adjustment is in the 'bulge' in the throttle cable just below the throttle housing.
A word of caution, don't get it so tight that handlebar movement applies throttle. After you think you have it adjusted, start it in Neutral. If it idles OK, turn the bars as short as they go all the way left and right. If the engine speeds up, loosen the throttle adjustment so that it doesn't. You don't need any surprises when you are steering the machine.
