Default V-Force doesn't like to shift into reverse - Praire 650 encouraged to reply too

I love my new V-Force but I am having trouble getting it to shift into reverse. Half of the time it effortlessly shifts into reverse but the other half of the time I cannot get the shifter to turn to the reverse position no mater how hard I try. This is often when I am starting the quad after it has sat for awhile, but it happens on the trails as well. To get it into reverse when this happens I have to put the quad in neutral and rev it slightly while holding the brakes and then shift into reverse. This works but usually is accompanied by a short grinding noise. Can anyone give me an idea why I am having this problem? Thanks in advance for the help!

try reducing your idle speed. If it's too high, you get that problem.

Maoz,
Try readjusting the footbrake to reverse lock out linkage, I set mine up so that I barely have to depress the brake to allow engagement.....big help. If you look right above the foot brake lever you will see the linkage, it is sort of a pin deal that has to get out of the way to allow the shift to happen. Mine was as delivered took quite a bit of lever depression to get this pin out of the way. You can just readjust this so that it takes very little movement to activate. I even thought about removing the pin for my racing , but since my kids ride mine also I think it's best to leave it there as a safety.

Revving the engine will not help to engage......if anything will make it more difficult. Actually lowering your idle will help it shift and engage more smoothly than with a high idle setting. My idle was set too high from the dealer, however I did actually raise my idle back up again for my CC racing.

I like the higher idle to help keep the tranny from disengaging on long or steep down hills, and I just deal with the slight clunk when shifting to reverse.

Also just shifting from Neutral to reverse also seems to be the most notchy, however if you shift from forward to reverse, and vise versa all in one smooth motion this seems to work the best,,....

Thanks for both of your quick responses - tonight I'll use them both to get hopefully a satisfactory result! Thanks again for all the help!

Good tip Tarrat.

The 650 doesnt have that lockout.

However, 650 owners have had a couple of different issues with the shifter.
1. You sometimes have to rock the quad to make it shift. A tight belt and or turning up the idle eliminates this. I have never needed to rock my 650 after tightening the belt.

2. The shift linkage needs to be adjusted in order to get correct shift engagement.
