Default choke finally working, well kind of........

OK, ever since I have had my DS the choke has been frozen shut and tonight I was outside in the garage smoking and figured I would finally get around to fixing it since winter is around the corner. I got the chocke lever out and it was high friction in there so I just worked it in and out for a while and then put a thin coat of grease on it where it slides in and got it working pretty decent but my bike will NOT start with the choke on unless I give it some gas and as soon as I let off it dies, then with the choke closed it takes a minutes of cranking before it fires like the choke flooded it. Is this supposed to be this way or is something wrong. I havent ever messed with the jetting and have recently done the spring mod on the carb, end cap mod and installed a K&N in the box with the lid still on so I was going to re-jet it this weekend but if my assumtions are true it is already too rich.

I'll take a shot in the dark here but there are 2 positions on the choke you might not have gotten it all the way in. On both of mine the chokes are easy to push in to the first position but to get it all the way in I have to use plyers and keep turning and pushing to get it to go the rest of the way.

well I feel it click twice when I pull it out and like I said when I push the choke back in it runs fine again after it burns off the gas from the choke being on but when the choke is on it wont fire on its own and I have to hold the gas to get it to stay running. Why does it click twice anyway, I thought mine just had a burr on it that made it do that but I guess it is normal.

When it gets real cold I have to pull it all the way out to start it and then push it in 1 notch and warm up a bit before all the way in. I guess its cause there so cold blooded but i dunno. Mine will do the same as you said yours is doing though when it is still out a bit. It won't take long before you foul the plugs. Probably wouldn't hurt to go ahead and change them now rather than after its to late (if the choke was still out some).

I think you should go ahead and do a full cleaning on your carburetor using carb cleaner etc. The worst this will do is yield a clean carb that still has the same problem and the best that could happen is that it'll operate properly. I know on my DSs the choke is a little tough, and on my 2001 I've actually pulled the black **** off a couple of times but they do move correctly and it will run when choked if it is cold. If you did all of those mods you'll want to rejet your carb as well. Also set you air screw which could help. Stock position for the air Screw is 2.5 turns out. I have mine at three turns out & it works well.
