Bought the wife a SP600, how to adjust idle??
#1
Well, after a few years without quads...(Sold my 01 Raptor and 02 Trailblazer in Sept 02) I decided it was time for some new toys!.
Bought myself a 04.5 Sportsman 700 EFI with the WARN Winch, and her a slightly used (88 miles) 04 Sportsman 600.
Problem is, the 600 starts a little hard, and doesn't seem to idle very high, around 800RPM, while my 700 lights right up (EFI I know), but idles at 1180.
I'm not very mechanically inclined, computer geek by trade, where do I find / adjust the carb to raise the idle on her bike?
Also, besides installing the headlight mod, what else should I do to the 700 to prep it for some hard core / high speed woods riding. I understand I need to protect the fuel line, any other tidbits an experianced SP700 owner could pass on to a new proud pappy?
Does anyone think that some heat shrink tubing would do a good job of protecting the fuel line?
Thanks!
Chris

You should be able to adjust the idle on the 600 by adjusting the throttle cable. Right handle bar about 6" down on the throttle cable there is a boot that slides over the cable. Slide that off and you'll find a small **** to turn, i believe you're only supposed to turn it a little bit. The procedure should be in your owner's manual. If you don't have the manual go to polarisindustries.com and download it.
As for your EFI, not much other troubles that i've heard of, i've driven one before and what a machine!

Thanks for the info! I'll make the adjustment today.
By the way, this 600 is pretty stout, we cut down 24 pine trees last weekend, and I used the 600 (It has growlier tires) to pull two 24 - 26 foot pine trees from the yard to the field! What a ride, I just hung on as it dragged the trees. Pretty amazing, considering I was using a 25 Horse 3000LBD 4WD tractor to move the trees until I decided to try it with the quad.

The adjustment mentioned by predatordude will work, but that is not the intended function of that adjustment mechanism.
The idle adjustment is on the carb. I do not know where yet, but I thought I would throw the little bit I do know out there.

If its like the 500HO under the carb there is a black hose that runs out to the left side (I think) with a screw type nut on the end that you can turn with your fingers. Start the bike and turn in to increase. I think idle speed is 1200 rpm.....

Don't adjutst it in the throttle cable, do it at the carb (it is the screw with the big, odd shaped head on it). If you get the cable TOO tight, it can accelerate unexpectedly, like when you turn a sharp corner, due to bind caused by not enough 'give' in the cable.
