sp700 belt on 500HO?
#1
Hello all,
I recently purchased a new belt for my 02 sp500HO and the guy at the polaris parts counter handed me a belt for a sp700? He said something about the engine braking? Anyways i have the sp700 weights to go along with the belt...the question is do i also have to shim it somehow on the primary, or where do i have to shim it on an 02 sp500HO? Hopefully do not have to...

xcrider,
So you didn't use the 700 56 gram weights.....just threw the belt on with the 48 gram stock 500HO weights......this i like....what were the results....low end , mid, top end???? I am very curious

Your 500 engine will not be very happy with the extra weight. I ran my 500 against a friends non HO and we were pretty close in a race and i would only slowly pull away at WOT. After the belt, I got a better launch and it would have longer faster legs at WOT and leave him in the dust.
Run a buddy in w the stock belt, put on the 700 belt and run him again. That way you'll know for sure.

I had a 700 belt on my scram once. Took it off because I heard of some problems with it waering into the clutches due to the differnt angle of the belt. But, I did notice that I seemed to have a little more top end. And it gripped a LOT better. I also ran it with the stock clutch set-up

BBS & xcrider,
Thanks! I have received a lot of conflicting information on this. Including shimming the secondary clutch and applying the 56 gram weights. However now that i have xcriders first hand knowledge i am going to put it on this weekend and see what happens. I have spoke to dealers and polaris mechanics and they all say that with the EBS no need to shim anything and that the belt is essentially the same except for the top ribs. So this makes me fairly comfortable and willing to give her a go.....thanks xcrider
BBS,
I am new to this , as you know , and get by with what miniscule mechanical prowess i do possess. So i have a question.....in the rumor you heard about the 700 belt on the sp500 was it the belt that wore out prematurely or unevenly etc... or was it the clutch or wear grooves or???????...sorry i really didn't understand your reply on my last post

I would also like to know if anyone has first hand knowledge of clutch wear by experience or seeing it first hand.

Supposedly the angles on the side of the belt are different for the 700 belt. From what I have heard on another forum is that some people that ran the 700 belt on their 500s experienced it actually wearing grooves into the clutch sheeves, or the clutch faces. Now, myself, I did not experience any ill affects with the 700 belt. In fact, I liked it a lot. But when I heard this it kinda freaked me out a little so I replaced the 700 belt with a stock 500 belt. Which has now been replaced with a Dayco Max2 belt which I really like. Putting the 700 belt on the 500s was a huge deal when the 700 first came out 2 years ago. But then all these people started saying not to do it because you can cause these problems. Some have experienced problems and others have had great luck with it. I for one had great luck with it, but then again, I didnt leave it on long enough to really damage anything IF it were to. By no means am I telling you not to put the 700 belt on. I just want you to be aware of this before you do.
