Airbox mod on LT80
#1
Any of you who have hopped up your LT80s how did you mod the airbox. Pictures would really help but good description would still be real helpful. After asking the question about the oil injector I got to watching it today at the dunes I think it is running too rich but before I mess with the jets I want to make sure I am getting enough air into the motor. The quad is basically stock except a FMF pipe and silencer as near as I can tell, I bought it used. It still uses a stock air cleaner too. I was going to order a UNI for it and try to figure out how to get more air but still be able to handle puddles and creak crossings upto about 8 inches deep. (kids like mud) Anyhow show or tell me what you have done to yours please. It runs pretty good but seems like it should do just a little bit better.

IMO::Air is not an issue here. My race bikes have been clocked at 53 mph on a TT track and that was with a totally stock air box and stock filter. They run 9800 rpm's. yours with the FMF would be lucky to turn 7000. Surely your stock bike can pull as much air as it needs.
You can cut the air box, simply pull the gas tank and study the air box top. You should be able to figure out where it needs to be cut. The fan side pulls air and robs the filter side of air.
Did you remove the injector pump drive and go pre-mix? The type of oil you are using could be doing this also.
Yes they run a lil rich, there is a 92.5 jet in it stock.Don't go below 85, and then keep an eye on the color of the plug.Understand that when you decrease the jet on a motor with oil injection, the oil keeps pumping. You may notice more oil dripping because there will be the same amount of oil in less gas. I was going to pull the oil injection unit latter this week and star doing the premix thing is kind of a pain though because have to have a seperate gas can for the LT80. I was going to buy some bosen reeds to to see if they would help any. I know that I just need to spend some money and have the motor done by Jack or someone but I keep spending too much on my Quad to spend that much on the 80 right now. I am going to play with the clutch too, maybe remove two roller see if that helps give it a little more. Just trying to find time and money to experiment a little. May have to jet it still we ride at anywhere from 4000 ft to 8000+ and I don't know what jet is in it right now. I have never taken a carb for a quad or motorcycle apart before so it is all new to me. 18 inch paddles made a big difference in the sand too, could have used a few more RPMs on the bigger dunes.
