Default Water Pump Problem On Polaris Scrambler

Hey guys I got a 1999 Polaris Scrambler 500. I noticed a little while ago that I was leaking coolant and traced it to the "weep hole" in the water pump. This is a built in hole in the water pump, and basically my question is, what does it mean when coolant leaks from there? I haven't ridden it since, but does this mean I need a new water pump or what? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Yep sounds like you need a new water pump.

Actually the pump is fine, it's the mechanical seal that has failed. It's a common problem with the Polaris's and cannot be replaced without special tools. If you need more information I can elaborate.

Default Water Pump Problem On Polaris Scrambler

Thx for the info, but I do have a few questions. Such as what tools will I need, and how difficult it will be. As in, will I be able to do it at home or have to take it to the dealer. Do you know what it'll cost? Also was wondering if it can still be ridden with the bad seal as long as the coolant level is kept up. Thanks.

"Such as what tools will I need"
For tools you need the special tool for removing the mechanical seal. Part# 2872105
Also the installation tool (don't have the part#). I would suggest you make the installation tool from a few pipe fittings.
"How difficult it will be".
It is not a difficult job with the proper removal tool but is impossible without it. If an attempt is made to remove the old seal without the special tool there is an extremely high risk of bending the pump shaft. If this happens the engine has to be removed and split to replace the bent shaft.
With the proper tools it can be done at home quite easily.
"Do you know what it'll cost"?
The seal is approx $35 CAD, gasket and shaft seal $4 CAD, low silicate coolant $16 CAD, the special tool is expensive $130 CAD. (going from memory). A couple of bucks for a few pipe fittings. To have the dealer do the job it will cost about the same but if you do it yourself you will have the tools for the next time the seal goes. This was my reasoning for buying to tool.
"Also was wondering if it can still be ridden with the bad seal as long as the coolant level is kept up".
Yes it can BUT in my experience once the seal starts to leak it doesn't last long after that.
The reason this seal fails is due to muddy gritty water being forced into the weep hole contaminating the seal from the outside. If you ride in mud there is a good chance this will happen again. I made a couple of modifications to mine that so far has prevented further failures.
Well I think that answers your questions but if you have more you know how to reach me.
