Default Sportsman 600 issues

My friend is having some major issues with his Sportsman 600, he was out riding it the other day and it just died. He says that it has never done this before, but it had been sputtering and stuff. He cleaned out some stuff on it and it still keeps dying. Does anyone have any ideas on what this could possibly be.....when I get more details Ill post em....

a few things.....fuel filter, bad gas (water in gas, which will also need a fuel filter replacement), new spark plug, check to see if the air filter is clogged....

here is a question for you. does the 600 just die outright? if so does your buddy have a keychain on his atv key. if so when he turns his handle bars the keychain might be turning the key off. this is a common problem with the sportsmans when people use keychains. I myself have had it done to me several times.

lol...you remembered my reply on the last 'it just quit'.....i was going by the fact that he said it was 'sputtering'... definitely make sure that you make sure he doesn't have a bunch of crap on a keychain with his key for the machine...it'll hit the gas cap and shut the machine off when turning, climbing, etc.

If it were an EFI model I would say watch out for the fuel pump going bad because my 700EFI's fuel pump quit on me with only 11 miles on the odo. It would sputter a bit to while it quit. the only other issue I have had with the quad is the keychain hitting the gascap and shutting the quad off just as Elkbow stated.

hey man, I have a 04.5 sp600 and have had major issues with loss of power, sputtering, backfiring and it was also allergic to water. Brought it in to the dealer and wa-la. I had a new stator, CDI box, Wiring harness, Ignition coil system, and a few other goodies replaced on my machine courtesy of Polaris. It turns out when the dealer called Polaris to order what they thought was a bad stator , Polaris in turn told them that there was some bad stuff going on in some of these machines and to do an overhaul with all these parts they sent as a complete kit. I had it all covered under warranty and now the machine is trouble-free. (my hands trembled as i wrote that last part) Hopefully this piece of info can send your buddy in the right direction.

I had this happen too me twice in the same day. One was while I was climbing up a steep hill...that was interesting. No more key chains for me.

This may be something simple but make sure the foam from around the snorkles up under the gas tank cover is not getting sucked into the airbox snorkle.
