Help! Just bought Sportsman 500
#1
Hey yall, I just bought a 2000 Polaris Sportsman 500 today for 2,500. It has 450 hours on it. It didn't come with the manual or anything showing any servicing done to it but it is in great condition. It has been sitting in a garage for about 4 months. I am looking to mod it out but had a couple questions since this is my first atv. I am going to replace all the fluids just to be on the safe side as well as changing the oil filter and air filter. my first question is, when i was looking at the air filter, it looked like it was soaked in some fluid. I was wondering if sportsman's air filters are suppose to be coated in oil as i know some atv's require this. Second, how hard would it be to change the exhaust because it looks to be rusted pretty bad and i would like to have a new shiny one? Can i install the exhaust myself or will it need to be welded? Any other suggestions for mods would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the fourms. The air filter might be a K&N if it looks like a redish color oil. If its the stock filter it should not have any oil on it. As for the exhaust is just an unbolt and bolt up thing no welding. I would also recommend a clutch kit for your first mod.

sorry, im not knowledgable but what will a clutch kit do? Also, any recommendations on an exhaust? By the way, I live in Georgia, and would love to take my atv to tellico. Maybe we could meet up sometime and you can show me what my atv can do.

A clutch kit will help you get your power to the ground. It will help reduce belt slipping and it will fill like a different machine. I have the Heel Clicker clutch and it works great. Are you wanting a whole exhaust or just a muffler? I'm thinking about getting the White Bros. E series slip on muffler for my 700 I have heard good things about them and they are tunable. Anytime you want to ride Tellico let me know and I will show you around.

I'm not for sure but I think maybe Big Gun makes a whole exhaust for the 500 but I'm not for sure. Maybe someone that knows more about the 500 exhaust will chime in and let you know.

I got the fuel gauge off ebay the only bad thing is it only goes down to the hump in the tank and thats when it reads empty. I guess it works ok because you know when your below the hump.
