I am looking for a suitable lubricant / protectant for the moving metal parts of an ATV. That is, brake cables, hinges, nuts and bolts, undercarriage gear etc. I would prefer spray-on if possible. Appreciate any info. !

Start by changing the question a bit -- you need "lubricants."

No one substance is going to work on all parts or all functions. For example, WD40 does lots of things well, but it doesn't stand up to hard wear. There's a specific spray made for lubing cables and there's a wide range of greases out there.

It amazing how many different cans of stuff I've accumulated since I started collecting ATVs, mowers, and other small farm equipment. Just in oil, I maintain an inventory of eight different kinds.

Anyway, I'm also interested to hear what others use and where they use it.

 

You need chain/cable lube for the cables & chain if you have one, which will also work to some extent in steering joints & such. The wd-40 type lubes aren't thick enough to last in those applications. For a protective coating on everything (except brake discs) I like fluid film. Does everything wd-40 does, doesn't hurt plastic/rubber, and lasts much longer. Like wd-40 it forms a moisture proof seal over ignitions and such, it just seems to last longer. Coat the underneath of your quad before mudding & the mud comes off easier, to boot.
