Stalling in water....
#1
Hi all. Newbie here. Great site for info BTW! The question I have is this......I have a 2005 AC 500 manual 4x4 with 27" mud lites. Where we ride, sometimes there is water on the trails and when I get in the water, ya I know this SOUNDS stupid, she sputters, sometimes shuts off completely. Water is below the winch sometimes, sometimes above. I originally thought is was something with the intake, so the next time she shut off, I removed the cargo compartment while I was in the water, and looked inside the airbox. Dry as a bone. Turn it over several times, she'll start but only idle for a bit, then she'll throttle up. When she sputters, she smokes white and smells like a gas motor when it 'diesels'. Get out of the water, she's fine. If it weren't for the 250 Recon's and 250 AC's passing me, I'd think the water was just a tad deep, but with these smaller ones going thru with no problem, I'm thinking I may have something else going on. Any ideas?? Electrical, exhaust under the water have something to do with it, choking for air? She still wouldn't start even with the lid off the airbox this last time until I got her out of the water. Any and all help is appreciated! Thanks!

I have had my 500ac in water over the air box and the exaust pipe. It did sputter and die but it fired back up and kept going as long as i was giving it hell. I figured it was because the exaust was under water is why it died.

mine did the same thing, it was my exhaust. where the muffler is clamped to the pipe, water would seap in there and cause it to bog down. die every once in a while. but it always started back up even in the water and it never smoked either. are you sure its smoke and not moisture with the smell of gas? ive had that to. if thats not it i dont know what else it culd be, i go in the water all the time up to, just under my seat with the muffler under water and dont have any problems anymore after tighting the clamp. my pictures show the 500(mine) and the H1 goin with no problems

This is a a bit of advice from the watercraft world... so it may not be accurate here What you describe sounds electrical, like the spark is getting shorted somewhere.
Check your plug wire for cracks, or even just pull the wire off the plug and give it a good coating of di-electric (tune up) grease on the inside of the boot.
