Default 2001 TRX500FA Transmission Lock

Engine runs, gear position display blinks "-" and when the throttle is opened while in neutral, the engine bogs down but does not stall. The gear selection works freely and finds all positions between R and L, but will not engage any gear either electronically or manually.

I went through the Clymer trouble shooting on fault codes 5 & 6 and at this point everything is pointing to the ECM, but it sure sounds like the clutch mechanism or transmission internal failure.

Any suggestion is appreciated.... Twich

mine did the same thing once, try this for a reset
1.put everything in neutral
2.turn key on,do not start
3.push electric shift button up, down, then up
4.push throttle to full open ,then release.
5.listen..... you should hear a small motor on the carberator for a few seconds
all this must be done quickly in the order listed for it to work
let me know if this helps

I knew it had to be too good to be true... no such luck. Even when pressing the up and down shift buttons, there is no change in the gear position and no sound from the carb after opening the throttle wide.

Let's hear some more ideas....

You said that you're diagnosing codes 5 & 6 so I'm assuming you counted the blinks on the display. I don't have a manual at home, what does code 5 or 6 relate to? Will the machine drive at all if put in gear?

Lark missed a few steps for resetting or re-initalizeing the system. (Again, I don't have a manual here but I've done this procedure a hundred times)
-- Start machine, put in drive, move forward 5 feet slowly, stop, put in nuetral, shut off key
-- Push both shift buttons together and then turn on key
-- Release both buttons then push up, down, up buttons (the sound you hear is not from the carb, it is the shift motor going thru its cycle)
-- Open throttle wide open, then release throttle to closed position

If you can't drive the machine forward, then try procedure by skipping the first step and going right to the part about pushing the buttons while turning the key on.
