Default Stupid question about checking oil in a Rubicon

Ok, easy enough.

According to the manual, you let it idle, warm up, shut it off and let it cool a bit before checking. Gotcha.

You unscrew and remove the dipstick, wipe it off, reinsert it but DON'T screw it in, and rely on that reading to check oil level, yes?

Ok, now, here's what's stumping me.

Where on the dipstick do you insert it to? The dipstick has a plastic shaft near the threads, and the end meets resistance as it goes into the check hole. Do you insert the dipstick all the way TO the threads, but not screw it in? Or, do you insert it to the begining of the plastic shaft? Look at this diagram, for reference.

Here's the problem. After my oil change (the first I've done myself since the shop gave me the first 2 for free), I filled to just below factory capacity (5.2 quarts). I think I filled to 5 quarts. If I check the oil by putting the dipstick in TO the threads (red arrow), it reads waaay high. If I put it in to the beginning of the shaft thingie (blue arrow), it reads just below max on the dipstick (perfect). Which is correct? The manual is vague on this.

TIA.

Gotcha....my local Honda dealership told me the same thing today. Weird thing is, this makes the capacity of my Rubi about 4quarts, nowhere near the 5.2 that the manual states in order to get a proper oil reading.

I definately let it drain thoroughly.....like 2 hours draining, it wasn't dripping at all and I followed the manual exactly...and yes I changed the filter as well. Weird, unless there's a resevoir somewhere that doesn't drain off, I dunno how the capacity listed is even remotely correct.
