Belt Adjustment :confused;
#1
Hey all,
I know this is a question asked alot but I have a service manual and you know they dont say anything about freeing up tension.. just aligment. Any way I have an 04 (Late) model 700 efi. I put a new belt on and its real tight when I start up and engage into gear it moves forward then shuts down. And yes the belt is the correct one I checked several times. Any Help thank you. this is also known as creeping. you dont want to free up belt tension on a model with ebs and there is no way to. In your drive clutch you have an ebs clutch and it has washers in it, take the belt back off and where the base of the belt rides in the grooves move that clutch back and forth there is probably quite a bit of play in it. In short, your in dyer need of a clutch rebuild. Also check on the moveable sheave of the drive clutch and see if you have any cracks on the sheave itself if so a new clutch is needed.

thank you. this thing only has 400 miles on it. I just purchased a clutch kit from ritter. If I need a new one can I go with an 800 clutch will that give me more performance?

With 400 miles on it the clutch should be no where near needing a rebuild. Why did you change the belt? If the previous belt broke then you may have strands of belt in between the sheaves and the sprague clutch (one-way bearing with grooves).
If you mean belt deflection is too tight then you should have had this same problem with the old belt. Deflection is adjusted with shims between the sheaves on the secondary.

I looked at it for Suds,when the rear of the quad is in the air with the wheels turning,something seems to bind in the driveline,the whole quad twists on the jack when it happens. I thought the belt maybe to tight,but I've never worked on Polaris fourwheeler before.
I keep telling him to trade it in on a real quad,like a Prairie or Brute......

I would think the taper would be the same, but with 400 miles you will probably only need to rebuild it. Seen a 700 with 300 miles on it and both washers were shot. The reason they go bad is because when a person is operating in high range under 15 mph the belt doesn't get up in the sheaves of the drive clutch thus causing heat build up in the one way clutch.
Garry on an ebs clutch you cant adjust the deflection.
