Default 2005 Scrambler 500 and Water Issue

After driving through a deep puddle at a quick speed that causes a moderate amount of water to be splashed up, or after post ride washing before putting it away, my Scrambler acts as though water has gotten into the carb (will not rev above a slow speed, burbles and sometimes back fires). A check of the air box shows no dampness. I have pulled the gas tank off and checked the spark plug tightness, the connection between the air box and the carb (two hose clamps on the rubber connector) and the carb connection to the cylinder head. All are fine. Can anyone think of anything else to check? Is it possible that some electrical connections are getting wet and causing this? After letting it sit overnight, it runs fine.

Help please?!

My buddie's '05 did this very same thing. Ended up being the rev limiter connections were getting wet. He used a punching bag ballon to put it in. Not the boxer/gym type, but the child type on a rubber band that you smack around. Seemed to cure the problem. To avoid the problem I used liquid black tape and coated that connector really well. I've never had the problem.

There is also a recall on the CDI for the '05, if you haven't had it replaced, you should. It's free.

Thanks for the info. I'll try to protect the connector and see what happens.

spray water on the spark plug and ignition wire.
If the problem starts, you have your answer

steBob:

Thanks again for the info. I started the quad when dry and it ran fine. I poured a glass of water on the module connector and restarted the quad and instantly it started to act up. I dried the connector out with a compressor and it ran just fine. I covered the connector with plastic and some wire ties. I should be set!
