2005 Scrambler 500 Possible Recoild Starter Noise?
When accelerating up a hill, or using throttle to maintain speed while climbing, I am getting a noise that comes from the driver's right hand side of the quad. The sound is like the chain is too loose and is rubbing on the chain guard. I tightened the chain and removed the chain guard. The noise is still there. The sprockets look okay (hardly any wear showing) and the chain tightened up all right. When I put the quad in gear on the lift, the same sound, although very faint, is coming from the recoil starter. The recoil starter works fine and retracts normally. Is there anything in the recoil starter area that could only be loudly rattling while the engine is under stress? 2nd question: Is the Polaris Shop Manual for the Scrambler really worth the asking price?

i think i have the same noise as you do and i have tryed everything to fix it i think it is the starter bendix ratteling a little and i just learned to put up with it. and as far as the actual polaris shop manual i have that and a hayes and the polaris is way better with deatails and how to fix everything nothing is left out. so if your going to be doing your own work yes it is really worth it.

If nothing is broke or messing up live with it.My old Scrambler makes all kinds of rattles but if you get to where you feel it check it out.The recoils do rattle on these. Also when the primary clutch buttons get worn they rattle and echo all over the bike.
