Default Magnum 425 reverse override

I just got a 95 Magnum 425 2x4. Do I really have to hold the override button the entire time I'm in reverse, or is something wrong? As of now, the button needs to be pushed and held before I shift into reverse, and as I am going backwards. If not, the engine dies. thanks for your help.

Yes you do have to hold the override when in reverse. If you let it go it will spit and sputter. It is one of polaris's safety componenets. And no you don't have to hold the button in to shift to reverse. Hope it helps

the engine shouldnt be dying if you dont push the button either as it interups the firing but doesnt kill the engine.

Well then, something must be wrong with my switch. As of now, if I don't hold the button, I can't put in into reverse....it will die. Also, I must hold it in while backing, or it will die. The guy I bought it from had a 400 4x4 of the same year. On his, he hit it once and it stayed. He was not required to hold as I do. Can I disconnect it completely? I don't care about the rev-limiter (my Honda had this for reverse, and I got used to it) but I don't want to hold the dumb button all the time!

Well I have a 1995 magnum 425 4x4 and I have to hold the button in. I also had a 2002 sportsman 400 and a 1987 trail boss 250 had to do the same thing. Unless he changed the button. I would lean towards a wiring problem.

Find the black wire going to the reverse limiter and unplug it.

Yeah mine does that too. IfI don't hold in the reverse override button it dies. The switch is bad. I asked the dealer about the price and although I don't remember exactly I think it was somewhere around 100 bucks to replace. Since you have to hold it in to have 4x4 in reverse anyway I figured I'd just live with the annoyance. Oh and don't even get me started on the requirement to hold down a button to have 4x4 in reverse.

Theres a VERY good chance your reverse limiter box is no good. If you replace it the problem will probably go away. They are not that hard to replace. Remove the fuel tank cover and headlight "Cover". Remove the old one, replace it, install the wires where they go and your done.

Make sure you have a good battery(even if the starter doesn't work and you use the pull rope to start it) Dead batteries on old Polaris' cause issues. The reverse limiter box is the popular issue when you run with a dead battery.

Why spend the $$$$$ replacing it when you can disable it where you can onmly need it for 4x4 in reverse by unplugging the black wire from it.
