Default 400 2005 idle problem

I have a 2005 sportsman 400. It has been runnig great up to the last week or so. I noticed it need to be choked then longer each time. Then It would not run without the choke on at all. Im in Florida. not a weather problem. I pulled the carb, cleaned the jets, checked the float(seems ok) . noticed main needle was poped out and spring was coiled in the top. This might have been when I took it apart. put it back no problems there. It will run and has power. It surges now. If I rase the idel it jumps way up. then some times it will come back down. the only thing I did not mess with and I think it may be the problem is the choke itself. I did not see how to remove the cable from the carb easly, so I pulled it from the head and left it attached while cleaning the rest. It is almost like it is sticking but yet I don't feel this when I operate it. Also I need to see what is up with my gas shut off. I closed it today hopeing to dry out the cab. The thing just keeps running. I am going to check it out tommorow. Any and all help greatly appreciated. Thank you Ron Keller

you could have an air leak somewhere like a cracked boot. i know sometimes if its sucking air the idle w/ be irratack and will idle high and slowly drop. could be a diaphram issue being bad and messing up the vaccume. maybe the shut off it broke inside and will longer shut off. just a couple of idears.

Thanks for the quick reply. Any idea if the leak might be in a line to the carb? or just the boot area. I might take the whole thing apart later today to check everything. I am going to take a close look at the diaphram since the spring was lodged in the top in a coiled configuration. Not sure what caused this. I am now thinking maybe a pin hole in it. I will let you know what I find

Thanks again for the help

Well I got my problem fixed. of all things it was the fule petcock. I new it would not turn off yesterday. Today I noticed it was leaking. While I had everything apart ( carb out again) I tryed turning it on and off. No flow when on. Thus I went out and bought an replacment. Put everything back and sure enough problem solved.

I think the old petcock was letting in air and this was causing the problem.

Thanks all for the help.

Now I am going to sell this machine. My nephew and I are more into fishing, time for a boat.

Ride safe..... Ron keller
