Well,
I think im just about ready for a pipe for the Xplorer.I'd like one that is as quite as it can be and still give me superiour gains in HP.

I think im leaning in the direction of a mid range pipe,as I dont want to rob the entire power band of power. As I understand it,if you get a high range pipe it robs you of low end,and vice versa? So what can you guys recommend for me,who do I call, and what can I expect to pay? What will my gains be?
Thanks to All!
Bill

Bill, I'd Dynoport a try. I've got there pipe with spark arrestor. It makes the beast a real rocket up to about 50mph. After that it mellows considerably but still gives you a topend in the lower 60's. Its not much louder than stock just alittle more tinnie. Fit is as good as the factory pipe. If I remember right the pipe was around $300, there pipes are all welded and very well done not the stamped variaty. here is there websight.

I was once at the dealer asking the very same question to one of the guys in the back. Someone randomly came in and said that they had their cylinder 'mildly ported' and put a hi-flow air filter in their bike, a 400 Xpress (same engine as Xplorer). He guessed about a 10 or 15% power gain, and more top speed with this done. To top it off he claimed that you could barely tell the difference sound-wise. I wish I had jotted down his name.
I asked the mechanic at the dealer what he thought, and he said it should work, in theory at least, to port it just a little, maybe put performance reeds in it, and use the stock pipe. My concern was to keep it as quiet as possible for checking cows during calving season. They said the gain wouldn't be what a pipe would do, but sound wise should be like stock, and the cost wouldn't be much different (porting was about $120, reeds varied on what brand you want). I was taking my time deciding if I really 'needed' more power, and now leech day, er, I mean Income tax day is fast looming (March 1st for farmers) so I don't know what I am going to do.

If you do find a way to bump-up the power a little without adding to the noise, let me know, otherwise I may just wait until I get 6 or 7 thousand miles on mine, and do the porting thing with an overhaul/new piston.

I've had good luck with the HPD Trail pipe on my 400. You can use the stock silencer / spark arrestor, and the pipe routing matched the stock pipe. I didn't lose bottom end and picked up a bunch in the midrange and top end. From what I've seen with my Scrambler, you can make too much low and mid range power, on my SC all the front end wants to do is lift off the ground.
As for the clutch, a Polaris plain color or HPD6 plain color spring in the primary, and a violet spring in the secondary is a good combo. I didn't use the primary weights that came with the HPD clutch kit.
I had Rick Ritter port the cylinder while it was off getting it bored for a new piston, back in July. The porting job was very mild as for port timing and he didn't remove a bunch of material so that it would be reliable.

Thanks for the information fellow ATVers,it is appreciated.I just come in from finishing my stock air box modification,I like it.On the Xplorer,at the top of the airbox is a rubber boot with a small snorkle on it.I said BYE BYE to that air restricting thing.I installed two flexable rubber auto hoses to the two inlet tubes that go to the top of the air box and lead them directly over the top of the fuel tank [out of sight] and now I have double the air flow to the airbox and my snorkling is much higher too.And man,you can really hear the engine sucking in the air more on any acceleration. My damn spark plug is allways black, and thats with a KN air filter and the air screw is backed out [lean] 2 and a half turns!I dont smell that ''rich'' running smell anymore coming from the exaust either.I allready rejeted up for the winter from a 210 main jet to a 230 main jet so im really not worried about leaning it out to much with all this new airflow.I installed my first spark plug today also.I will be certain to watch its color.I took it for a test ride and it ran excellant throughout the entire powerband.I think I'll probably have to stay with the 230 main jet to accompany whichever pipe I decide to go with.Later and once again,
THANKS TO ALL,
Bill

I am not sure about this, but in order to reap the benefits from a Porting don't you have to have a better flowing pipe to compensate. Usually people get a pipe...then the porting.

I know for me the V-Force reed valves helped a bit. You may not agree totally on this one Bill..but I am still a strong believer in a good clutch kit.

If I have room in the trailor, I will bring the Xplorer down with me this summer. (just in case the Scrambler decides to break down...god forbid!)If yours is still close to stock we could compare notes...see for sure if the EPI is doing it's thing!

Brian,
a clutch kit is very important on ANY belt driven automatic ATV.What I THINK you and I earlier disagreed on was the ''Erlandson'' clutch kit.I had one on the Sportsman, and for 230 dollars installed,it STUNK.I have ALOT more gains on my Xplorer with just changing the primary spring to green [30$]than the ENTIRE Erlandson kit [230$installed]on the Sportsman.

Im not 100% im keeping the Xplorer, one minute I am,the next im not!BUT,im 85% sure I PROBABLY will keep it.The chain[one thing I worry about alot] has been good to me since Polaris installed a new concentric unit, sprockets and chain,I've only adjusted it once in around 250-300 miles. And I dont know what im worried about,I have a 3yr extended warrenty on it,and plus im on pretty good repore with Steve the Polaris Mechanic.

I cannot keep this beast down on the ground in low range since I went to the green primary spring. Now if I could only get the quad to react a little like that in High Range?Maybe a COMPLETE clutch kit? Please dont tell me Erlandson again?Dont forget,I have EBS.

Here's somthing that may be useful...
Check out the thermal wrap that Jim is using ( great photos of the quad too! )

I had considered using this type of wrap on both quads, but never did due to other projects. I had even been considering Jet-Hot ceramic coating the pipe on the Scrambler,( about $ 60.00 + shipping. There's a Jet-Hot ( www.jet-hot.com ) shop about an hour from the house, and the wife's got sales calls about 1/2 mile from there, so she may take it over there. )
