01 Ranger 6x6 is running ragged. I can only run it about half throddle and after that it pops, spits and spuddlers. It sounds like it is hitting the rev limiter but there is not override button and also it does in forward , high and low and reverse. I have cleaned carb repeatedly and change the spark plug.

 

I guess I did not realize that the Ranger was built in '01.
If you have the 500 engine, I would suspect the camshaft exhaust lobe has worn down. This is pretty common to happen on the 425/500 engines with some age, especially quicker if Polaris specified 0W40 motor oil is not used.

 

So ...what it the fix or solution for it ...it needs a new camshaft???

 

we have a 96 425 magnum that does the exact same thing taking it in sometime this week to get it looked at.

 

Hmmm...before you go tearing the engine down, you may want to check if it has a ETC, I'm not sure where in the throttle linkage it would be but I would guess it has one and this sounds like it may be your problem...may not be but a good place to start before you do something major

 

what is ETC?????

 

Electronic throttle control...it is a safety feature...if you have the manual, it should tell you how to adjust it
