Default 04.5 SPortsman 600 can't go over 45!

Our neighbor asked me to check out his Sportsman because it only goes 45 he said. (I get stuck fixing everyones snowmobiles because I know alot about them, and now everybody is starting to bring there 4-wheelers to me)
I took it out and it goes like a raped ape until about 40, and then it starts chattering a little?? and it just can't go any faster that 45. I pulled the clutch cover off and the belt and clutches looked fine. I didn't disassemble them because I didn't think that they were the problem. Everything looks good with a quick inspection of the primary.
It pulls hard until it hits about 6000 RPM's, then it slowly climbs to 6400 at 45mph, and thats it. like i said, something chatters a little bit down below. I don't know if this is a transmission problem or what. It has me stumped. Has anybody run into this?
I don't know a ton about 4-wheelers yet, like I said, I spend all my time on snowmobiles. What RPM's is the 600 supposed to pull at?
Thanks,

Steve

First off what year is the 600? It may be a problem with the secondary not shifting out all the way. You can take the clutch cover off and take it for a spin. Open it up all the way on a long stretch and look down to see if it shifts out all the way. If not then there is your problem. Does it spit or sputter when opened up? Does it rev good?

it is a 04 and a half model. It seems to run fine, no spitting or sputtering, it definetly seems like a problem somwhere in the drivetrain. It revs fine, pulls rreally hard up to 6000 RPM's.

Sounds like a gearing issue. If it's that new, take it back to the dealer for warranty work. Hell, my 400 will do 60.

You can get extended warranties up to 6 years. 6 years costs twice as much as 2 years. I think they're worth it.
