2004.5 Sportsman Overheating issue SOLVED!
#1
Greetings everyone. I have been browsing these forums do to my recent purchase of a 2004.5 Polaris Sportsman 400. I purchased the machine about a week ago. It is in pristine condition, and has about 500 miles and 90 hours on it. It has been very well maintained, and was owned by an older gentleman who never beat on it. So, I was shocked when I rode it twice and it began overheating. The coolant would boil over from the resevoir. I took the thermal sensor out, and cleaned the connector. I topped off the antifreeze, and rode it again. It overheated again. The indicator lights would not tell me that the machine was overheating until I turned the key off and then back on. When I did this, the HOT CHECK ENGINE light would flash, and the fan would come on. The fan would run for a few seconds and shut off. Well, I spoke with the previous owner, Polaris, and the dealer who serviced the machine. I found out that the machine was NOT covered under the ECM recall, but that the dealer had replaced the ECM as a "good faith measure" after the initial recall notice from Polaris. The original owner had given me a bag of "stuff" with the machine which included the original ECM. So, I switched out the ECM with the green dots on it for the original ECM. Lo-and-behold, problem solved. My Polaris now runs great and does not overheat. So, if your having overheating issues, which prevent the fan from running normally, I would suggest looking at the ECM. Even the new ones can fail. I hope this saves someone aggravation.

Sounds like your originial ECM was a good one. Did you have to give the other one back?

Yes they needed the old ones back...........The original ECM just turned the engine off when the headlights were turned on!!
However the new replacement one.........when it failed........kept the cooling fan running even without the key in the quad!!
So that was the real fire issue to me..........Not the Factory one but the replacement....................................... .Now the thrid one in there is the same as the second one...................Silver not black.........
My wife's still on the same old Factory one...........No issues yet!!
But we are about number 18 on the dealer's list here for her new up-dated one!!
But do I really want it!!.....LOL....LOl...Caper............

Mine was replaced by the dealer as a "good faith measure" for the previous owner. I was given the old ECM with the bike, which had the new one installed. It was the new one that failed. I am now running the original ECM, which is working fine. I am probably going to contact Polaris about it, just to give them a heads up.
