1996 Polaris 425 Magnum 2x4 issues

Hello all...
I'm obviously new here. I was just given a '96 425... I don't know if it's a curse or a gift just yet. :-)
FWIW, the previous owner had sent it to the shop to get some repairs done. After getting it back & paying $800, it ran fine for just a little while... and then started backfiring black smoke & fouling the plug. She parked it... and it sat for over a year when she finally gave it to me.
First thing I did was disassemble the thing and give a good pressure washing. It was nasty. I drained the tank of the old gas... and flushed it well. I cleaned the obviously darkened plug & then just tried to start it with what fuel was left in the line. It fired right up... and didn't sound too bad. It felt as tho it was sucking too much air thru the carb with all the intake removed... but that's about it.
I reassembled everything and put some fresh gas in it. After cranking a bit to get the fuel flowing, it finally fired up. It idled ok for a second... but quickly started spitting and sputtering. With any rev, it would backfire and throw black smoke out the tailpipe.
It never got better than that.
Here's where I was gonna start. I planned to tear into the carb. I figure it's running rich, so I'll check the float and needles. I am not a four-wheeler guy, but have done gobs of car work. I can't believe they are THAT different.
Is this the right direction? FWIW, the odometer shows 373 miles. That doesn't sound bad for a '96 model.
Thanks for the help!

That's not even one summer's worth of riding in 12 years, so nothing should be worn out. I think the carb rebuild is the best place to start. It could be caked with varnish after all that time. Throw away that old plug too and get a new one.

That has a CV carb so it needs vacuum to work right.Check the diapram on the carb for holes, replace the needle and seat along with the main jet tube. Also first check the valve clearance it should be .006 on both.

Might be cheaper to look into a K&N Carb. Kit then OEM - ebay, denniskirk or any after market co. for that matter, there is a bunch of them out there and the machine is plenty new enough that kits should be readily available. After sitting so long you'll come across little things "wrong" with it over a period of time once you get it running, don't let it get you down the machine has low miles and the effort will be worth it I'd be willing to bet.

We have the same atv except a 4x4. it was doing the same thing. we tore apart the carb and pretty much replaced it all. brought it into local dealer to get a look at and it is the cam(have been known to do this) it is wore down to much and it will cost around $800
