Default 2003 Honda Rancher ES shifting Problems

This is my first post. I tried searching around a bit, but couldn't find an answer. I am mechanically inclined and have no problems doing work my self.

Question is:

The 2003 Honda Rancher 350 ES 4x4 had problems shifting into reverse last year after the engine was warmed up. It occasionally would work, but most the time it wouldn't. So fast forward to this year. The first ride, the ATV did alright. But now after it got parked, it now will no longer shift into or out of any gear with the buttons. I have to use the manual shifter.

What might cause this? I am looking to get the parts to fix it and take them up to the cabin next week and fix it. Is it possible the ECU is fried?

Thanks for any help. Also ask any questions, and I will answer them the best I can.

Matt

First make sure the battery is in good condition , the 2003 TRX350FE should flash a trouble code ..?.. Is your gear position indicator not flashing a code..?..

No its not flashing anything as far as I know. Dad is just relaying the message to me right now. I have not tried or been close to the machine since around christmas. But the battery prolly could use a charge from sitting, but it was good when we got it.

Turns out that he was out riding when it happened. He went 1st to 2nd no problems. 3rd and forth no problems. Then he tried shiftiing down from 3rd to 2nd, and it wouldnt shift and the place in the dash just gave dotted lines. Would that indicate just a bad battery?

I have had two, now the third shift motor assembly. The problem is worse when the engine is hot sometimes but you never know when it will occur. Sometimes it works on rare occasions, sometimes no problem, most of the time it's "get out the wrench and drive in one gear. Two trips to the dealer with no better results. I have heard from others that have the same issue.
Mine has been used very little; actually because of the shifter I never know when it will work, it's just not reliable.
I am adding a stick shifter and forget about the piece of junk electric.
I would sell it but do not want to stick someone with the aggrevation.
Artic Cat is a much better machine, Yamaha second, Suzuki third, Kawasaki fourth; the Honda Rancher is dead last. I'll buy a no name before Honda.

MustangMatt96GT if your gear position indicator isn't flashing a trouble code then your bike is a 2000-02 model and you have to follow the troubleshooting flowchart for the ESP .. And if it is an 03 and your indicator isnt flashing then your dealer should have contacted Honda ..
