Default Late 80's LT50...No Clutch Engagement...Newbie! Help!

Ok let me first start off by saying I am a complete newbie when it comes to ATV's and working on them. Let me also say that I am a cert. mechanic who has been working professionally in the field for about 6 years. So I am VERY mechanically inclined.

My mother purchased my nephew a lt50 last year and the guy said it might need a new transmission because older bigger kids were riding it and abused it. It worked for some time but then died. Now my question is...do these things have a drive clutch or a transmsison like a car? I am clueless. if someone could please direct me in the right direction it would be great. Thanks!

Here's a link to the transmission assembly diagram I found using Google.

It is for a 2005 but I'm sure that most years are going to be similar.

Good luck!
