Okay, first for the tips. Sell things to help pay for the ATV. BEG for one, never stop talking about buying one, and don't show him a really expensive ATV. You should look into buying a Suzuki Z-250. It's not too much money and its a sport quad. You should also introduce him to the payment deals Suzuki has. For the Suzuki Ozark 250 (which I have) and the Z-250, the monthly payments are only $39.00 per month for the first two years. It does not require a down payment. I also know that the Berkshire mountains in Eastern Mass. have riding trails. So if you convince your dad to buy one, then you could go to those mountains and ride.

As for an ATV, if you cannot convince your father to buy one, personally I would wait to find one I want to buy because by the time you're 18, there's going to be a lot more ATVs out on the market. But for now, the Can-Am DS450 is very nice. It has a lot of great features and it's light and agile. It is fast and fuel injected and...well...it's an ATV, whats not to like about it!!

Check a dealer for information on renting an ATV from somewhere. They will give you the information you need.

Welcome to the forums.

Im gonna have to say, try to buy used. But dont buy if
1. The person lives far away from you
2. Its over 5,000$ (Anything used thats worth buying even a 2008 sportsman shouldn't cost that much, its only 5,500$ brand new for a polaris sportsman 400 H.O. (High Output))

Also it depends on what you will be doing. If you are going to go mudding, (Mudding- A time in the sport where multiple riders see who can make it through the deepest mud hole) than most likely you want a work or utility atv because they can do better in mud and you can modify them to go great in sometimes 5 foot deep mud.

If you are only go to trail ride and its mostly flat some uphill than you could get a sport but once again a work/ utility would do better on the uphill.

If you have a sand pit or desert like area than a sport quad is perfect for you.
The best part is that you wont need bigger than a 250.
Hope I was helpfull.

Try telling your father that it will be a great way to learn vehicular physics and control before you start driving. I started riding go-carts, dirt-bikes, and ATVs at a very young age and it made the transition to driving a car seamless. Driving a car on an open street is simple after spending years riding on tight trails. I would never dream of putting my children in the driver's seat of a car or truck without experience on an ATV or other similar vehicle first. Also, try telling him that it will teach you responsibility (and it truly should) because you'll have to take care of, and maintain the ATV, as well as respect the fact that it can be dangerous.

If you want to race, you are going to want a 450 most likely. Since there are so many of them out just now, and you may be buying a used model down the road, you have a great opportunity to research them now. Browsing the forums can get you an idea of what breaks and what works. Also, you could easily save enough to buy a decent used 450 in a years' time with some ingenuity and hard work. The first gen 450R and YFZs can be had right now in the 3K range. Don't forget to budget in some good riding gear too. You should know that racing is ridiculously expensive though, and you may be better off getting something to ride for recreation unless you have strong parental backing.

Most Chinese quads have serious problems.
