Hello...I have an 08 500 Sportsman Touring, Stealth black. Great bike so far, well minus the broken cv joint last week, but it was fixed under warranty so all is well.
Today I noticed that when in reverse with the wheels spinning in 2 wheel drive and stuck in sand, there is a clunking noise from the rear of the bike. Seems to only do it in reverse not when stuck in forward gear in 2 wheel drive. Any ideas as to what this may be...or is that just normal drive train noise for reverse?

Well talked to a few dealers today...apparently it is normal driveline backlash while in reverse as the tires grab at the terrain.....if not good thing for warranty ;-)

Ya it is kinda hard to believe that noise is normal, lol, but I can see where's he's coming from and it does make sense. Just hope it doesn't do any damage, mind you how often do ya really spin the wheels in reverse in 2 wheel drive right. It's a fluke I did it the first time really.

 

I have 08 700 X2 and its the same....Just gear lash.

 

It's a good idea if the wheels are spinning and start hopping to get off the throttle. Better to put it in AWD and get out then break things.

 

good point moose.. i would like to add that you should allow the tires to stop spinning before putting it in AWD so you don't break your front roller cage and loose AWD

i think there is a sticker by the gas cap stating this

My machine did the same thing then got worse and had to change my back axle
