Default Synthetic Winch Rope & Plowing

Is anyone using their synthetic winch rope with their plow? I've been switching back to my steel cable and roller fairlead every winter, but I'm sick of repairing the cable every other storm. The rope is SO much nicer to use, I was wondering if it held up any better than the cable when plowing. Also, does anyone know where I could buy a shorter length of rope to use with my plow. The place I got my rope from (and every other place I've seen that sells it) only sells 50' lengths. Figured I could just put on a 15' piece for plowing. Thanks.

One of the best things about synthetic is that using it to plow doesn't kink it like a wire rope. You could get rid of the steel cable altogether and be better off.

I made the switch and haven't regretted it. Rope is much nicer and stronger than cable. Just make sure your fairlead is burr free or get a new one so it doesn't damage the rope.

I know I've seen short synthetic cable extensions for plowing, too... I think rocky mtn?

Anyhow, steel does not tolerate repeatedly being bent sharply and unbent in the same spot...

The rope is much better for plowing, no question about it. The flex is easier on the winch itself and the constant up/down will not cause kinks in a rope as it will a cable.

I realize this is a little late but if you still need some rope let me know. I have a spool of the Puget Sound 3/16" synthetic rope so I can cut what ever length you want. I don't braid the loops in it though, instead I will give instructions on how to attach it to the drum so you don't need the loops braided and you will have multiple lines coming off the drum so the rope will last longer.

I have been using this rope for several years now with no problems. I have also setup several other locals here with the rope and none of them have had a problem.

A new, aluminum one is a better choice.
