Default Yamaha Warrior - Place to start

Hello all, First post.
Just bought a 2003 Warrior nice overall condition. Starts and runs fine with full to half choke but when pushed in it stalls. I also noticed it backfires through the carb and that also causes it to stall. I was going to try a valve adjustment, and carb rebuild but just curious to see what you guys have to say. I havent had a chance to tear into it to trouble shoot yet but hopefully soon. Look forward to your input, Thanks.

rebuilding the carb would be a great starting point, I recently bought a 93 warrior, I could get it to start fine with the choke all the way out,but as soon as I pushed it in it would stall, also it would backfire through the carb, if I pushed the throttle it would backfire through the carb and stall, I finaly found out it was missing the rubber o ring between the carb adapter and cylinder head, probly from the previous failing to put it back in, it was sucking in air at that point,(vacume leak) while your warrior is running spray some carb cleaner around the adapter between the carb and cylinder head see if it changes the idle speed, spray it around the carb but not in the carb, it sounds like you could have a vacume leak somewhere, if you do find a vacume leak and repair that rebuilding the carb would still be a good idea, it is a cheap improvement

I had the same issue with my 02 Warrior and the jets were clogged. Here's my thread with symptoms, suggestions and fix...

Ok, so it doesn't run without the choke on, but it does with the choke on. When you turn your choke on, you essentially richen up the fuel mixture. Just think about it for a second, the pilot jet controls 0-1/4 throttle, so if it only idles with the choke on, the pilot jet is probably clogged! I am not saying this is the problem, but I am saying I am 99% sure it is the problem. The pilot jet is small, and gets clogged by gas varnish in a few weeks!
Clean/rebuild the carb and let the forum know!

Ok so I finally got the time to work on the Warrior. I rebuilt the carb and Checked the valves, re-assembled and all is well with the choke off now. Valves where set correctly so it must have been the carb. Nice and smooth now as it should be, nothing looked blocked or really that dirty, but I did find a few things. First I found the Acc. pump wasn't working right it was sticking, and the float needle spring retainer clip was missing. Not really sure that this caused any of the choke off stalling but all is well now. Thanks for all the input guys, on to the trails.
