Does anyone have a problem with rough shifting on the 2001 Lakota Sport? it doesn't seem to go in gear on the 1st try all the time, especially when i am stopped and go to put it in gear, i have to move the bike a bit. Can this be adjusted, or does it need more break in time or do i just have to get used to it? HELP!

Break it in more and then change the oil it should shift better after that.

You may need to adjust the clutch. It is adjustable, if you don't have a service manual get the local dealer to photocopy the procedure from their manual. Mobil one oil works well if you try an oil change.

I found that you can widen the transmission's "sweet spot" by adding one small step to the clutch adjustment procedure. Step one (after first loosening the lock nut) is to turn the adjustment screw clockwise until you feel resistance. Step two is to turn it back counter-clockwise until you feel resistance. The additional step is to simply turn it back 1/4 turn in the clockwise direction.

Please note that my comments are based on the Bayou's auto-clutch design which may or may not be like that on your model. However, another reader may be able to help with this.

I have ridden several lakota's (5 different ones to be exact)...........ALL of them needed the shifter moved down a notch to make shifting easier. furthermore, most dirt bikes, and atv's need a little "roll" to help change gears.........thats not unusual at all.

my '99 Lakota is also a rough shifter, I took it back and they cleaned the clutch plates but it didn't change anything, it still gets stuck between gears and when i first start to ride it slips very badly.

My wifes 2000 Lakota has the same problem. I have adjusted the clutch and changed oil a few times with no improvment. So I ordered a Barnett Clutch kit and will install it when I get time in the next week or so. The machine was fine when new but started happening a couple weeks ago when I was riding it (I ride pretty hard) so I thought it was my doing but after hearing this topic I think it is a Lakota prob. I feel better not that I didn't break my wifes quad.

could your idle be too high? If you have too high of a idle, you're tranny won't want to shift because of there will be a load on the transmission because the clutch will be engaged.
