Have 2009 Sportsman 500 EFI fairly new with 250 miles on it. Last night I was in high and tried to go over some big logs. Hit throttle and none of the tires turned and smelled belt. (Don’t think damaged only a few seconds). Popped it into low and it went right over the logs. I know I should have shifted to low first. Question is should the belt be slipping that easily? Does it need to be tightened and can it be?

 

were you going through water at all, and if so how high

 

no water, was just messing around in the yard. machine was probably only running 5 min. I'll pull the plug tonight anyway. Haven't been through water (1ft+ or so) in a few weeks.

 

id bring it to the dealer to take a look, you wont have to pay nothing

 

Yes, anything below 7-10 mph you should be in low.. When traversing logs?? YES you should always be in low. Might consider a HeelClicker clutch kit,helps on belt grab & take off..... If you burnt belt bad you should be able to see flat spots and maybe feel/hear it. get a service manual pay for itself in a very short time. Working on the clutch is fairly easy......

 

yep sounds like you had it in high at a time that you needed low..

 

I have a 09 800 and i was having belt issues.i burn,t one belt and i even had to replace my cover cause the belt was coming slack and rubbin on it. I up graded my secondary spring and now my belt stays tight. I payed 19.95 to where a kit was 2 to 3 hundred.
