Exclamation Newbie: ? about clutch one xplorer 400

I just bought a 2001 xplorer yesterday. Its the first polaris I have ever owned so I don't know to much about it yet. It acts like it has a stall converter in it(like a car). It has to rev kind of high before it will start moving. Once it gets going it runs great. I like playing around on little hills and stuff but it doesnt want to even climb small stuff. It just revs up and the clutch doesnt engage. The guy I bought it from told me it had an aftermarket clutch in it. He told me that he had the clutch set up so it would build up the rpm's before it would engage, (that way it would pull harder when the clutch engaged). Im planning on using it for plowing snow this winter and I want the clutch to engage as soon as I give it throttle. So my question is, is there a way to adjust the clutch at all or did he feed me a line of BS. Does it need a new clutch or is it adjustable? If it is adjustable, how do you adjust it? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Brad

Sounds like either a belt problem or the rear clutch ramp buttons are worn or a little of both. The belt shouldnt have more than a inch and a half play measured by pulling down on middle of belt at top between both clutches,if more has stretched.(Thats an 1 1/2" if you use a straight edge across both clutches and the belt drop shouldnt be more than 1 1/2" from the straight edge. Shims are taken out of rear clutch to take up some slack, but wont take up a lot of slack if belt is really worn. Usually 3 shims are in rear clutch, but one has to be left in. Clutch had to be taken apart. Search up rear clutch repair before you tear into the clutch, has to be pre wound after ramp button replacement or shim removal. Good luck OPT

ASounds like you have a clutch kit in it.If you can take the cover off and tell me what color the front clutch spring is and what te numbers on the weights are I can get you where you can have lower engagement and not loose power.

Yea, thats why I was thinking maybe the belt...possible previous owner burned it running the high rpm engagement another thing he said is that it doesn't want to climb hills....that the engine revs, that points toward slippage under a load. jmo
