Because I'm thinking about getting a Recon, I was talking to a guy at a trail that had an 05. He said beware of the D shaped idle mix screw that takes a $200 wrench to adjust it. He said he had the Honda place remove his and put the old style in which is the same except the head is slotted. Any truth to this guys story?

 

I have 2 , they are for adjusting the air screw .. This is 1 of them , this 1 is made by Honda .. I also have a thumb screw type that came with a jet kit .. There are a few companies make them fairly cheap..

Thanks HM. So, if I buy a Recon, am I screwed (no pun intended) if I need to adjust the idle mix?

 

Just for clarification, this is NOT the "idle adjustment" screw. The idle is easily adjusted with a screw driver, out on the trail.

An "air/fuel screw" on the other hand should only need to be adjusted when you first rejet (if you make any changes to the intake/exhaust), and maybe with the change of seasons from hot to cold weather (most folks would never bother!), so I can't figure out what the big deal is here???????

 

Not really a big deal but I am a tinkerer. And what if I need to disassemble the carb to clean it?

 

Should be easy to get some tubing and flatten it on one side, to make your own wrench.

 

I bought the little d socket from some tool company I found on the web for $2, but it cost me $5 shipping for it....LOL

On my new recon (07) I opened up the fuel/air screw 1/2 turn an it idles better an stays running when its cold now. Same thing I've done on all the the hondas I've had.

Honda has their bikes set to lean from the factory for my like'ns

 

All the manufacturers are quite open about the fact that they jet lean to meet emissions standards. I guess this is an owner's clue to fix that first thing when they get their new bike home!
