My stock Goodyear Wrangersports are about shot on my Scrambler so I am getting .190 Aluminum ITP rims and Titan 489's from Rocky Mt. I was just wondering about useing my stock rims and tires and modifying them some how for winter traction. Did anyone see the Winter X games? The dirt bikers put ice screws in their lugs to give then awesome traction. Would it work on a Quad? What about chains too?

Chains are really only for low speed riding. Such as plowing, or crawling down trails. Obviously, if you install them snug they should stay in place. But the danger is of them coming loose and slinging around damaging the quad and possibly riders. It really depends on what riding you have in mind. Since you mentioned they X-Gamers, I'll assume your going to be having some fun. I'd go with the screws. If you were listening to the guys on the X-games talk about them, then you heard them say they are better on the ice than in the snow. The screws will only help if they have a hard surface to bite into. Good luck.

I have the same quad as you and my wranglersports are almost shot also. There were drag races at teh lake by my house about a month ago so I studded the tires. I put about 180 1/2 inch sheel metal screws in each rear tire. BUT be sure you want to put the screws in. I was going to take some screws out and move them around, but they had gone all the way through and punctured the tire! Now, the screws are rounded off and they don't help at all. If you put them in your tires, don't plan on taking them out. I also put some tire sealant in each tires just incase there was an air leak.

 

Another winter rider...put 1000 steel roofing screws in my 27" bi/triclaws, worked awesome until we got more snow than I cared to drive in, or could for that matter.

 

I put screws in my stock scrambler tires also. They were shot so I decided too try it. I used screws with the square heads on them (small as I could find) then put a small nut to take up thread space so they wouldn't go right through. I put one on each lug and they worked awsome. On the frozen lakes I could baerley spin my tires. They worked awsome for about 4 rides and then I made a mistake. I rode my quad on a gravel rode that had half melted ice and lot's of gravel. It tore almost all my screws out. If you do this, don't make the same mistake I did.

 

Chains are better for pure traction, but are not for going at high speeds.
If you just want to get through deep snow/ice, or for utility work I think chains would be better, and are easily taken off if need be. Screws are better I think for high speed. You don't run the risk of winding the chain around something.

 

I use the rotien atv studs i have a box of 500. They work slick There the 1/2 Inch ones I also put them on a old et of wranglers and one per lug Now i can wheelie on ice. But i did not put any in the front wheels So it does make turning harder it makes the wheeler want to push the front straight so u ned to burb the throttle to turn. Check out those rotien studs .They work.

 

Go to the Dennis Kirk online catalog, atv section, click on search, change the search section to tires and enter in screw. They have an assortment of ice screws.
