Default polaris 300 2x4 wont start

I am working on a friends 1995 polaris 300 2x4. Right now it will not start, it was running great then stalled 1 day. After that it was a pain to get started using a lot of choke and taking the airbox off seemed to help. Once it finally started it would run and idle great (said he noticed it had more power before the problem started) but if it died back to the 30min start up. Now it just wont start at all. So far I've found the compression is low, 70lbs. I'm not sure what the spec. is. While it's cranking it's also spitting fuel out the back of the carb, which had been cleaned out and adjusted to spec. The low compression makes me think a ring job would fix it but dosen't explain the fuel spitting out the back of carb. Any ideas?

Thanks for the reply. Planning on tearing the top end down and, if the cylinder looks ok, replacing the rings. Also gonna put a carb kit in it just to be sure it's good to go. The question I still have is why would worn rings cause it to spit fuel back out the carb while cranking? I'm a tech. by trade but have limited exp. with 2 strokes, especially pistion port design. Also curious why after it started having a problem starting, why it would have more power than before the few times we managed to get it started?

Dont waste your time and $$$ just ringing it.Get the cylinder mic ed and get it rebored to the next size and be done with it.
The reason it spits gas is it is a piston port engine (no reed valve)Need comp to pull gas in and push fumes out.

Thumbs up

Where would one go about doing this? Ok, cats out of the bag, Total NEWB..
Do motorsport shops do this or do you need to find a machine shop?
Best "kit" to do this with?
I've seen ebays offerings?
Thanks and sorry to hijack the thread, I've got a similar problem and thought it might help.
