Sportsman power failure
#1
I was riding the other day and the sportsman just died, 02 500HO. The key would not turn it over, all the indicator lights are out. I could pull start it, (Not something I am willing to try too many times). It will run but no lights, power of any kind. I had to come home and look in my manual for the 20 breaker. I have not tried that yet since I have not got back to where the popo is stored. Should I expect this to fix my complete problem. Thanks Tony

This past weekend I had a very similar issue but on my 850xp. No power to the pod except I could see the clock if I pushed the mode button. Other than that dead to world. Bike was in Park, hand brake applied, kill switch in correct position.
Odd thing about it is I hadn't been in any water or had done anything very extreme that day so I knew it had to be a loose connection. Turned out that the electrical plug going into the handle bar headlight & kill switch assy. was pulled out and not seated. Plugged it back in all the way and problem was fixed. Fortunately it took me about 5 minutes to find the problem

Sounds like a lose connection some where, I think the breaker self sets after a few moment, you do not do anything. Check all connections and take of the front rack and hood and check those connections also.
Really, I rode my for a month using only the pull rope, with the 500's decompression system,it pulled over much easier with one hand than my 250 Moto4 or 350 Big Bear did with two hands.
I could pull start it, (Not something I am willing to try too many times).

My uncle's 03 was doing the same thing. It actually would die and sometimes come right back on. Sometimes it would just die and you would have to wait before it would restart. He found that one of the relays under the front box was shorting out. I'm not sure which one it was, but it was melted. It ran the igniton itsself. The fan was the only thing that would stay on, all the lights and bike itself would die. Hope this helps.

Traced the wires today, I have power all the way up to ignition switch. But no power when turned on. I jumped from power wire at ignition plug to solenoid wire on same plug and bike started right up. This leads me to believe the switch itself is bad. I have one off my 03 trailboss that I will try.
Also I pulled off the clutch cover. It looks like the bushing is out of it. I can actually grap clutch and get some movement of it rocking on the shaft. Of course it creeps. Does the clutch have to be pulled apart with special tools to replace this. Thanls Tony
