86 Yamaha moto4 YFM225S engine turns over without "catching" + carb issues
#1
Hi everyone,
Hopefully someone can help - I have an '86 Yamaha moto 4 (YFM225S) that sat for a few months in my shed. It was running perfectly when it was stored. I put a new battery on it and the engine turned over like usual but would not start. I figured the carb was plugged up so I took it apart and cleaned it. Also drained the old gas out of the tank and put fresh gas in. Got everything back together and tried to start it - no start unless I sprayed carb cleaner into the carburetor while cranking it. Then it would start and run great as long as it had plenty of carb cleaner, but would stall when you stopped spraying. Then, as I was trying to start it again, the starter stopped turning over like it was caught on something for a second. After waiting a few minutes with a battery charger on it to keep from killing the new battery, I tried again. Now, the starter and engine seem to turn over freely without "catching" - just seems to spin freely. I seem to have compression, as you can feel pulses of air while cranking it if you put your hand behind the exhaust (or at the spark plug hole if you take the plug out and crank it). Also, there is no suction at the intake side of the carb while trying to start is like there usually is - Any ideas as to what the problem is? Appreciate the help
P.S. - also put a new spark plug in it.
