Hello,
I have a 98 xplorer 400 that has a loose belt. I removed all but one shim in the driven clutch but I still can pinch the belt together between the two clutches until they touch. It is a brand new polaris belt. The belt is a bit longer by an inch than my book says it should be, but I got it from a polaris dealer. Is that a common problem with belts not being the exact length? Also, should the belt rest all the way down on the drive clutch when its not running? Any ideas?

 

First off is it a # 3211077 belt? If so and you have removed two shims from inside the driven clutch,I'd check the engine motor mounts,plus CENTER to CENTER on the drive clutch bolt and driven clutch bolt should be 10 inches! The belt should rest all the way down on the drive clutch and towards the top on the driven clutch,belt deflection measured from the top middle should be less than 1 1/2 inches! Yes it is a 3211077 belt. Center bolt to center bolt is 10 1/8". The belt's outer circumference measures 41 3/4 " but my book says it should be 40.875. Is it common for them to be off by that much? That seems like it could be a problem being off from the book by nearly an inch, or is my book wrong. Clymer in not the best at accuracy sometimes. Thanks for the help!

 

Best thing I can tell you is to check it out against another belt if everything else checks out ok on the clutches,,etc! With two shims out of the rear clutch you shouldn't be able to collapse the belt! OPT
