Default What switch on the trans is the 4x4 switch?

I have a 2001 Sportsman 400 4x4. It has 2 switches on the trans. Which 1 of the switches makes the 4x4 work. I had someone tell me about 1 yr ago that the switch was bad. I have been using 2wd. I need to get it repaired. I can't get a returned phone call from a Polaris mechanic friend of mine. I want it fixed this weekend. Thanks

I don't know for sure which switch runs what, but you should be able to use a test light or multimeter across the switches and see if they open and close as they should. The wiring was pretty simple on those machines, you can probably trace the wires from the solonoids on the front axle up to the connector board then to the switch on the bars and whatever else they run through. I had a 300 about the same year that the 4x4 didn't work when in reverse, I just wired it so I could put power to the switch anytime the key switch was on, that way it didn't care what gear it was in, the 4x4 would work.

do you know if you have power going to the awd from the awd switch. i think the switches onthe transmission just tell the bike what gear it in to make the override work correctly and where neutral is. it maybe just a power issue not getting to hubs to engage the awd.

There is nothing electrical or mechanical on the trans that effects the 4 wheel drive.

Thanks I will check it out. I will post my findings later. This must be a great forum. I had 3 responses after only a couple days of joining. I have been on another forum for over a year and only had 1 response. I might have to convert over to this forum full time. Thanks everyone.

I got it fixed. Jumped a hot wire and wire going to hubs and bypassed the switch on the trans. Working like a charm. That switch has something to do with the 4wd.
