Default 03 Sportsman 600 whine

Hey guys! I've been looking all over this forum for some solutions, but I couldn't find anything specific to my problem. I have dirtbiked quite a bit in my life and this is my first time owning an ATV. Anyways, this is what I'm experiencing. My sportsman makes this high pitched whine and it only does it in high range, not in low range or reverse. At first I thought it might be the belt, but after inspecting the belt and listening around, it sounds like the whine is coming back by the transmission. The issue doesn't affect performance when going forward, but that whine is a bit too loud in my opinion. Any thoughts would be appreciated!

Welcome to the forum! I first started hearing the noise you're describing on the old 96 300s as a bunch of these would whine! Owners drove em for years with no problem for the most part! Only thing I could determine on some was the different bearings they put in along with a little chain stretch. They used a combination of Russian and Chinese (both junk) and Japanese which were good quality. When I got to these I replaced them with better bearings when I rebuilt the transmissions. Noticed this on some of the newer ones as they aged, I know it's irritating, but the only way to solve it is to tear it down and check out the bearings(you can tell real quick!) and the chain. I've even tried different lubes to try to quite em down, but with no success. Plus check out the rear drive shafts and prop shaft also, and for any hub bearing and cv play, but like what you said most of the whining noise is transmission related. OPT

All right, thanks for letting me know. I can't work on my atv this week while I'm down south, but I'll post back here when I find out something.

Also, if you or anybody else think of something else, let me know!

I got the news from Full Throttle sports. When I bought the atv, the transmission fluid was almost empty, unbeknownst to me. By the time I got it home, it was already empty of fluid and messed up a bunch of bearings and a gear in the transmission when I rode it for a little bit. It seems a seal for the transmission went bad and transmission fluid seeped out. Unfortunately, the transmission showed no symptoms when I test drove it, and the rest is history. It will be repaired the middle of next week. I can't wait to go riding out!
