Default "New" 1995 Polaris Sportsman 400...where to begin?

Greetings all,

I recently caught the quad bug. I've had the chance to ride several friend's quads, and discovered that I must have one. One of my friends has several older quads and is willing to sell me his 1995 Polaris Sportsman 400. I have ridden it. He said that its only real issue is that the 4wd system leaks after it's engaged (bad seals?) and he doesn't feel like fixing that. It has new Duro Buffalo tires on it. Right now he runs it in RWD only. He is willing to sell it to me for $1,000. This will be my first quad. I've already picked up an appropriately sized trailer to haul it.

My questions are...where should I begin with this thing? I definitely want to add a winch (and I've already found the appropriate mounting place). Are there any other relatively inexpensive mods that this particular ATV will respond well to? Is replacing 4wd seals a terribly expensive job to have done? Any advice for a beginner?

Welcome! If you don't plan on replacing the seals right away, make sure you keep hub fluid in them to keep the system from damage if it hasn't already done so! Look here on your model under "front wheel" and "front strut assembly" as to the parts involved. It's an electro mechanical system that can get costly on bearings,Hilliards, coils, along with the seals if any damage has happened. Best to get a manual plus there are several You tube videos out on seal replacement that can be of help. Browse OPT
