Usually not the transmission but worn out internal shift box parts. You can try to adjust the linkage and see if it helps along with making sure the belcranks(levers) on the transmission are tight. Have it in neutral, loosen the lock nuts on the linkage ends, remove both linkages from the shift box levers. Adjust the linkage ends to where they drop straight into the shift box levers with NO resistance, the tigten the lock nuts and two nuts securing the linkage. While you have the linkage arms off see if there is a lot of free play back and forth on the shift lever while still in neutral. If there is,adjusting may or may not help.Dirt Cheap Yamaha, Honda, Arctic Cat & Polaris OEM Parts & Accessories – Cycle Parts Warehouse

Another way to tell is to disconnect the linkage from the transmission belcrank, use vice grips to manually place it in gear and then see if it jumps out of gear. If it does then you possibly have a shift fork problem or engagement dog wear on the slider gear along with the main drive gear.If it stays in gear then it's probably wear on the shift box internal components that need to be addressed.

thanks i will try that if it is the shift fork or the slider gear would it be cheaper to get a good used trans or replace fork and gear i have seen trans on ebay for about 250 and will a 97 or a 99 trans work in a 96

Got to be careful on used parts, could be in worse shape than yours. You'd have to pull the transmission any way if that is the problem,so just check yours out. A lot better than installing another one and possibly having problems again.

Down load this pdf service manual and it will show what's involved in this transmission. Not one of my favorite jobs as there are a lot of parts along with a couple chains,etc.http://gh-ftp.com/ORV%20Manuals/Pola...e%20Manual.pdf
