1998 big bear 350 4wd starting problem
#1
my big bear is having starting problems. i have replaced the starter, solenoid, and battery. the electric start turns the starter motor but i still have to pull the pull start once to get it started while hitting the electric start like the starter motor isnt turning fast enough. could it be a faulty solenoid? maybe not pushing enough power to the starter motor? if so how much power should be coming out of the solenoid if i was to put a meter on it? any suggestions, ideas?

It is extremely difficult to check power with a meter. Most AVO meters only go to 10 amps and the starter pulls a lot more than that. Check the earths both onto frame and engine, check the heavy leads on the battery for corrosion at the terminals. To be sure it isn't burnt contacts in the solenoid, short across the heavy terminal posts. The symptoms are like a bad battery or starter so you could have bought a dud.

I had that on my Polaris. It would start with the pull rope but not with the electric start. Turned out the pickup/Pulse coil next to the flywheel was dirty with crud. I cleaned it up and the electric start started it up once again.

all of the connections are clean and tight, its not acting like a low battery. it sounds like its spinning fast enough to start but i still have to give the pull starter one quick pull just to give it that boost. i will check the contact by the fly wheel to see if its dirty though.
