Default 2003 Polaris 700 engine noise

Hey guys,

Just picked up a 03 Polaris 700, seller said it had an engine knock. Battery was dead so I had to wait till I got home to charge it. Got home charged it and got it to start, running pretty rough.. it was sitting for a while, when starting there’s no engine noise but when it does kick over and runs you can hear the knock, definitely louder when you hit the throttle (of course). Being a noob to Polaris where should I start, I did read to look at the clutch first.

any tips will be greatly appreciated

thank you
Derek

Try to isolate where the noise is loudest. Mechanics stethoscope or even a rolled card board tube can help with that. Sometimes hard to tell but if sound is radiating from the top, then piston slap. From the bottom, could be rod bearings or crank bearings. Yes if the clutch guide buttons are really worn it can sound like an engine noise problem. But on that as rpm increases the drive clutch usually gets quieter not louder. If you have to tear into it,you're going to need this cheap manual.2003 Polaris Sportsman 700 Service Manual PDF Download

I hope it's nothing like this car engine.
